Your Sage won’t heat up
If the machine lights up but doesn’t heat, or the coffee is lukewarm, it is most often a sensor, a thermal fuse or the heating element. Sometimes letting it cool down and descaling it helps.
What you can check yourself
- Switch the machine off and let it cool for 30–60 minutes. It has a thermal cut-out that trips when it overheats and resets once the machine has cooled.
- Make sure there is water in the tank and that the tank is seated properly. Some models stop heating without water.
- Preheat the cup and portafilter by running water through first. A cold cup and a cold portafilter give lukewarm coffee.
- Check the temperature setting on models with a display (Barista Pro, Touch, Oracle, Dual Boiler).
- Descale the machine. Scale on the heating element makes heating slow and uneven.
Tip: Unplug the machine before you clean it or take parts off. If it needs opening, leave that to us.
Typical causes when the checklist doesn’t help
Thermal cut-out
The machine has a fuse that trips if the pump or grinder overheats. If it doesn’t start again after cooling, the fuse or another part may be faulty.
Faulty heating element or thermocoil
The machine turns on but never gets hot.
Temperature sensor
The machine thinks it is hot enough, or too hot, and stops heating.
Control board fault
The controls don’t send power to the heating element.
When does it need repairing?
If cooling down and descaling don’t help, it needs a repair. Heating faults require opening the machine and measuring it, which shouldn’t be done at home.

Why is my espresso lukewarm?
Most often because the cup and portafilter are cold, or the machine hasn’t had a few minutes to warm up. If it’s still lukewarm, it can be a sensor or scale.
